Join Danny and his friends as they have many misadventures in a southwestern Pennsylvania steel town during the late 1950s and early 60s. The story has many memorable and odd characters. It was a much simpler time; there were no cell phones, computers, or video games. People still gathered around the radio to listen to 'Superman' and 'Fibber Magee and Molly'. If they were lucky enough to have a TV, it was black and white and all kitchen appliances were white. There was no Internet. The closest thing to was the Sears Catalog, where you could order anything from a toy train to a Craftsman House.
Sputnik, Echo, and who knows what were circling the earth. The local dump provided everything kids needed to keep them occupied. There were areas in town that still had outhouses. They were poor but didn't know it. Kids could roam the neighborhood without any worries. Their parents would tell them "Come home when the streetlights come on."
If you are looking for a book like 'War and Peace' or 'Moby Dick', then look somewhere else. This book is more like Jean Shepherd's 'A Christmas Story'; if it were a movie it would be rated 'G' for general audiences. Whether you are 12 or 112, I am sure you are going to enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Hello all!First off, let me tell you that this book is an engaging and entertaining story driven by real-life events of the author. Having had the privilege of knowing the author personally, I can tell you that it is written from the heart and soul. Anyone who grew up in the Johnstown, Pennsylvania area in the late 50s/early 60s can really take a walk down memory lane with many of the references; on the flipside, this book really embodies what I envision boyhood to be like in this era, so those who did not grow up in this timeframe can get a very detailed view on what that was like. This is a classic journey of the innocence of childhood when times were better, more enjoyable, and just completely non-reliant on technology.
Mr. Rayner is truly talented and is the kind of author who draws you in immediately; you won't be able to put this one down until the end! Enjoy!

Winter Is My Middle Name edition by DW Rayner Heather Rayner Ditch Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed every minute of this book!
Reminiscent of "A Christmas Story"! Great read!
memories of old takes you back
The book, while fictional, was much like the childhood that I knew. I was the youngest, but my older sisters were of this time. It brought back good memories of a much simpler time.
A sweet, wholesome story about growing up in the "good old days." Loved reading about the ways the kids amused themselves...(who would have thought that a refrigerator door would make a good sled?). Anyone connected to western Pennsylvania should get a real kick out of this book.
Winter Is My Middle Name by DW Rayner
Story of a boy who loves winter and everything about it. Goes through the various months of the year and also follows a few of his friends and the things they do.
He can't wait to leave and go to Canada.
Like the ending and how nothing happens that they expect.
If you grew up in the late fifties and early sixties you will relate to the adventures of Dandy. I plan on reading this to my grand kids to let them know what it was like before smart phones and computers dominated our lives. For me the most striking difference between then and now is how when we weren't in school we were outside playing. No "planned" activities- totally open and free to our imagination and where our bikes could take us.
